It was chilly when I woke up this Saturday at 5 in the morning. Had it been any other day, I would have just tucked myself back and gone back to dreaming. It is not my weekly routine to jump off the bed at 5, especially on a Saturday. But, this Saturday was different, and I was looking forward to the big day ahead. I leapt out of bed, got into my running shoes, and stepped out. The fresh breeze and the tiny droplets of rain reassured me that it is going to be a perfect day for the ‘Marathon’, a 10K run to make my city a greener and better place. I plugged in my earphones and drove off to Decathlon, Sarjapura.
It was too early for Bangalore, especially for software professionals who fight against their circadian clocks. But to my surprise, people made it in higher numbers than was expected. The mercury stayed low, adding to the spirit of seasoned marathoners, first-time runners, social activists, media personalities, and volunteers. I found people bustling in groups, discussing how best to get to the finish line. Volunteers distributed Go Green Run t-shirts and caps to the participants before the gun was fired. People hurried beating the fog towards the finishing line. Participants were sweating, panting, and sometimes resting for a breath of fresh air. It was a great to see people with vigor on the streets of Bengaluru running for a social cause, a green cause.
As the runners approached the 10km mark, they paced up to be the first finish. It was Nanjundappa, who was able to make it in just 33 minutes, closely followed by Raja, who clocked 39 minutes. The ‘marathon’ was followed by the handing over of prizes by Reeth Abraham. That was followed by a scrumptious breakfast.
Before the event came to an end, the participants were treated to Indian jazz by Mystik Vibes, which is a music band from Bangalore. .
Show stoppers at Go Green Run:
- Reeth Abraham, the heptathlon National Champion and Arjuna award winner, special guest at the event
- Runner Nanjundappa ran with steady speed to complete the marathon in 33 minutes
- CSM Software team completed the corporate relay, road, and gravel track in 25 minutes
- Mystik Vibes music band entertained the crowd with innovative fusion music
